COMPETENCY ASSESSMENTS & CAREER PATHING

What are competencies?

Competencies are any attitude, skill, behavior, motive or other personal characteristics that are essential to perform a job, or more importantly, differentiate superior performers from solid performers. They provide a means of looking at those behaviors that differentiate the "best from the rest" and a common language for talking about critical on-the-job behaviors.

What are competencies used for?

  • Recruitment - Ensure candidates applying for a position fully understand the requirements of the position.
  • Learning and Development - Competencies recorded as part of performance management can be used as a starting point for development planning.
  • Career and Succession Planning - As an assessment of potential and future development, competencies form an important part of succession planning. Competency profiles and competency expectations for different positions can be used to assist in career decision making.
  • Performance Management - Competencies are critical behaviors demonstrated on the job and are often part of performance management. They provide expectations for "how" the job is performed, not just "what" gets done.
  • Rewards and Recognition - Competencies are one way of conveying organizational expectations of behaviors. To be effective, rewards and recognition need to be consistent with organizational expectations and linked to organizational goals.
