Credit Union Financial Counseling Certification Program (FiCEP)

FiCEP, CUNA’s Financial Counseling Certification Program, enables all credit union staff to become more confident in helping members build a stronger financial future.

How does FiCEP enhance your services?

“Last year, I began working with two of our members who came in looking to buy a new horse trailer. They were in trouble with their credit and finances and had low credit and high debt ratios. We were not able to help them at the time for a number of reasons including high ratios, low scores and no money to put down. They had a number of credit cards with balances and were struggling despite their good income. I suggested that they stick with their old trailer until they could better afford a new one. Even though I think they were disappointed, they knew that was the right decision and were happy to have someone reinforce that decision. I used a vehicle to refinance some of their high rate cards and developed a plan to pay off the rest. Recently, they came in to look at financing a tractor. Their credit scores are now pushing 700, and their debt ratios had dropped below 37 percent. We not only financed the tractor for them, but also took over some higher rate financing they had on two other vehicles and saved them about $100 a month. It was a good feeling to not only turn around their personal finances, but make them profitable members for the credit union.”
